Area Foundation helps usher in new CAST Tech building

SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 12, 2019) – With a snip of the ribbon, the celebration took place and an unused building became filled with life again.

The newly renovated building at the Centers for Applied Science and Technology (CAST), officially opened Nov. 12, to applause for the school’s 250 students who will now have more space for learning, study and creation. CAST Tech is located at the school once known as Fox Tech in the San Antonio Independent School District. It is now an in-district charter school focused on business and technology.

The new building was funded in part by a $250,000 grant from the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation, a fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation. Marjie French, CEO of the Area Foundation shared these words, “When we think of the fact that kids in our community often have their paths pre-determined based on where they live, it is innovative efforts like this in-district charter that is changing that trajectory. CAST Tech represents everything that local entrepreneur John L. Santikos loved – crafting great experiences, helping youth to succeed, and good, old-fashioned hard work.”

At CAST Tech, students follow career pathways in either business, technology or user experience. The curriculum is a combination of computer-based learning; hands-on projects; and job shadowing, mentorships and internships from top industry professionals and leaders in the area. Students can graduate from CAST Tech with up to two years of college credits in addition to industry standard certificates.

The additional CAST Tech building is one of six capital projects either completed or near completion that were funded in 2018 by movie-goer contributions to the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation. In all, the six nonprofits received a total of $3 million for their capital improvement projects.
