New executive leadership program launches for nonprofits

SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 8, 2019) – There’s a gap in advanced leadership development for leaders at local non-profits, according to research by the San Antonio Area Foundation.

To fill this gap in professional learning, USAA has provided a grant to the Area Foundation to deliver a new leadership program for CEOs and senior leaders of nonprofit organizations in the San Antonio area. The USAA Senior Executive Leadership Program draws on best practices in adult learning and utilizes a cohort model to facilitate peer learning.

The curriculum is structured around topics such as performance excellence, behavioral styles, emotional intelligence, employee coaching, crucial conversations, managing change, and systematic problem-solving. Twenty-two local CEOs and senior leaders are participating in the initial cohort program.

“This program is a direct response to what our nonprofits have been asking for in the areas of leadership and talent development,” says Marjie M. French, chief executive officer for the San Antonio Area Foundation. “We developed this program based on research and dialogue with local nonprofit senior leaders and benchmarking with other training programs, locally and nationally.”

The leadership program’s design is guided by two findings from the Area Foundation’s research:

  • A cohort model is highly valued to reduce isolation among senior leaders and create a network who can support them in their role;
  • A gap exists in providing more advanced leadership development for CEOs and other senior leaders.

Participants will put into practice what they learn in each session through follow-on peer learning and training with experts to equip them for real-time challenges and opportunities.

“USAA is highly supportive of the new cohort program and we’re honored to be part of the pilot,” said Harriet Dominique, senior vice president of Corporate Responsibility at USAA. “We are pleased to support the San Antonio Area Foundation because they share our commitment to improving the quality of life in our community.”
