Area Foundation welcomes Patricia Mejia as VP of CEI

SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 28, 2018) - The San Antonio Area Foundation welcomes Patricia Mejia as vice president of Community Engagement and Impact. In this role, Mejia will provide executive leadership and strategic direction to shape and implement programs and initiatives that will guide grant making at the Area Foundation.

“Patricia brings a wealth of nonprofit leadership and knowledge to lead our grants initiative team, which grants millions in discretionary funds to area nonprofits,” said Becca Brune, president and COO of the Area Foundation. “Further, she will help guide our strategies as we align funding to four key fields of interest in 2019, while balancing equity in our decision-making,” Brune noted.

Before joining the Area Foundation, Mejia was director of community engagement at Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Inc., where she oversaw the organization’s regional strategies and collective impact initiatives. She also formed collaborative partnerships to facilitate systems and social change as well as leverage philanthropic investments.

Her experience in the nonprofit sector includes roles at Family Service Association and deputy director at the National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders better known as NALCAB. In both roles, Mejia worked to strengthen individual and family capacities for upward mobility and asset development through financial empowerment, affordable housing, and small business development.

The St. Mary’s University graduate was also named an executive leadership fellow by the National Hispana Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C., in 2007. She was co-founder and executive director of the 21ST Century Leadership Center at St. Mary’s University from 2001 to 2007, also serving as an adjunct professor at the university during that time. Her international travels have taken her to places like Bangladesh and Turkey where she studied community development.
Mejia completed coursework in social policy from Brandeis University’s Ph.D. program. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in political science and public administration from St. Mary’s University and is a graduate of the executive leadership program from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

She has chaired and served on several boards including the Network, a national Catholic social justice lobby, and the Women & Girl’s Fund, an outreach fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation. She most recently served on the Alamo Plaza Advisory Committee and a work group for the Mayor’s Housing Taskforce Special Populations.

The Corpus Christi native is recognized regionally and nationally for her empowering training, effective facilitation, as well as her innovative program and organizational development. Her commitment to creating more equitable communities served as the firm ground for all of her professional work.

Mejia is married to Gernonimo Guerra, is mother to 2-year-old Karolina Cecilia. She enjoys traveling the world, listening to Conjunto/Tejano music, and playing with Canela, the family dog.
