Area Foundation now accepting online scholarship applications

SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 12, 2019) – The San Antonio Area Foundation is now accepting online applications for its 2020 college scholarship funding cycle. Using tools available on the Area Foundation’s website, students can fill out one application to be considered for multiple scholarship funds and also apply individually for specific scholarship opportunities.

The Area Foundation, which manages more than 90 scholarship funds, awarded nearly $5 million in scholarships to 1,200 students in 2019, including new awards and renewed scholarships from previous years. Through the generosity of its donors, the Area Foundation has awarded more than $23 million to more than 4,000 students in the past 10 years.

All scholarship funds will be open for applications Nov. 11. Common applications allow students to fill out one application, and be considered for multiple funds based on the student’s responses. Students can also apply individually for scholarships with custom questions and criteria. A complete list of opportunities along with tips and guidance for applying is available on the Area Foundation’s website.

The deadline for common applications is Jan. 8, 2020. Custom applications for specific scholarships are due by Jan. 31, 2020.

“Our scholarship program is one of the most important ways we improve lives in our community,” said Marjie French, CEO of the Area Foundation. “Helping students reach their educational dreams also helps strengthen the local economy and improves the quality of life in San Antonio.”

Some scholarships fund a student’s education in a specific area of study, such as health care or engineering. Other funds help students attend a fund advisor’s alma mater or award scholarships to students from a specific high school.

In addition to traditional scholarships, the Area Foundation also offers Student Emergency Grants, which offer emergency assistance to students that receive renewable scholarships.

“Our goal is to help students ‘to and through’ college so minor setbacks don’t create a situation where a student drops out,” French said. “For example, if a scholarship recipient faces a situation that could affect their ability to stay in school, such as a stolen laptop or transportation issues, they may be eligible for assistance.”

To prepare for successful scholarship applications, the Area Foundation encourages students to take steps such as volunteering at local nonprofits, maintaining good grades, creating a list of all awards and certificates, writing about experiences that have molded or shaped their life and planning letters of recommendation. Students are also encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application starting in October of the student’s senior year.

The Area Foundation’s website provides more information and resources to help students identify scholarship opportunities plus resources to help them succeed in school. The site even features an eligibility quiz to guide students who are interested in specific scholarship opportunities. Visit the Scholarships section.
