Important update about Area Foundation training programs

SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 28, 2018) – Since 2012, the San Antonio Area Foundation has provided training and certificate programs to strengthen the nonprofit community. These programs align with our mission to ensure that our nonprofit community and leadership has the tools and resources it needs to effectively address and serve the growing needs of our community.

In an effort to ensure our training and development programs remain relevant in meeting the needs of our nonprofit providers, in 2017 and 2018, we used a third-party facilitator (Foundation Strategy Group FSG) to conduct a series of focus groups with program staff and CEOs from nonprofits located across the eight counties we serve.  We made sure we had a broad representation and diversity, to include but not limited to size of organization, annual budget, number of employees, and areas of focus.  The objective was to have a candid conversation about Area Foundation current board training and development offerings, capacity building classes, trainings, and leadership development opportunities.  The feedback we received was invaluable and has been used to inform our strategies moving forward.  The attendees were complementary of the current offerings; however, challenged us to go deeper in our work, using the term, “Capacity Building and Training Development 2.0”

Attendees expressed a desire for board training programs and offerings to be transformational in nature. Specific topics asked for innovative board development and training, data analytics, evaluation and assessment, risk management, human resources training (talent development, recruitment and organizational development and redesign, etc.). Nonprofits present asked us to consider offering higher level classes appropriate for CEO and senior-level staff as well as cohort-based programs, and peer learning opportunities. 

With this in mind, the Area Foundation leadership and Human Resources and Organizational Development (HR/OD) staff began benchmarking other board development and training programs, capacity building efforts and programs, both locally and nationally.  The objective is to build off our strengths by expanding and deepening our current and future offerings.  Based on feedback received from our nonprofit partners, we are committed to offering programs and trainings that will draw on best adult-learning practices so that participants have an opportunity to put into practice what they learned during the sessions and then follow-on peer learnings and trainings with experts to guide successful application and integration. 

In an effort to focus on new programs and enhance the popular programs currently offered, the HR/OD team will suspend Board Day and UIW Social Media Certificate programs for 2018.  Board Day will resume in 2019 at a date to later be determined with our event partners – the Association of Fundraising Professionals San Antonio chapter and Masters Leadership Program of Greater San Antonio Alumni Association. The UIW Social Media Certificate program will undergo further evaluation.
