About the San Antonio Area Foundation

Overview

For 48 years, the San Antonio Area Foundation has connected donors of all backgrounds with the causes they care about most for the betterment of San Antonio and the surrounding region. The Area Foundation provides a highly personal approach to giving, offering a variety of giving tools to help people achieve their charitable goals.

Established in 1964, through a trust created in memoriam to San Antonio business leader and philanthropist Nat Goldsmith, the Area Foundation has significantly enhanced the quality of life of our community by:

  • providing outstanding service to donors
  • producing significant asset growth
  • strengthening community collaboration
  • managing an responsible grants and scholarship program.

From scholarships to programs on animal welfare issues, support for programs assisting wounded military heroes to senior social and health care programs, the San Antonio Area Foundation understands and supports solutions to our community’s growing challenges. Community-based grant applications are offered in several different program areas in an annual cycle. Donor‐advised fund grants are distributed throughout the year. The foundation manages $220 million and has distributed more than $200 million for scholarships and grants to educate youth, preserve the environment, protect animals, fund research and provide services that enhance the quality of life for people living in and around San Antonio.  More than 300 students a year receive financial assistance for college from the foundation’s managed scholarship funds.

Board of Directors

The San Antonio Area Foundation Board of Directors is representative of our community’s rich business, civic, and cultural diversity. The Board establishes policies, organization-wide priorities and program strategies, and ensures operational integrity and financial accountability.

Management

As President and CEO, Dennis E. Noll oversees the Area Foundation’s operations and staff. The Area Foundation has six departments: Administration, Finance, Development and Donor Services, Grants and Programs, and the Center for Nonprofit Support.

Staff

More than 30 staff members are committed to the highest service for our donors, nonprofit organizations, and volunteers as well as to the sustainability of the San Antonio Area Foundation. Staff members represent a wealth of expertise in the field of charitable giving and in knowledge of the needs of the San Antonio Community.

Volunteers

More than 120 volunteers donate their time and expertise by serving on the Board of Directors, Steering Committees, and /or Community Advisory Committees. Our volunteers come from a variety of professions including business, education, military, civic leadership, and medical.

Assets

As of December 31, 2011, the San Antonio Area Foundation held $217.5 million in total assets.
