South Texas Hispanic FundMissionTo make a difference in San Antonio and South Texas communities by expanding Hispanic involvement and charitable giving. HistoryIn 2007, Hispanic leaders, city and county officials joined the San Antonio Area Foundation Board and staff in unveiling a new outreach fund aimed at benefiting the Hispanic community – the South Texas Hispanic Fund (STHF). PurposeThe first fund of its kind in the state, the STHF further strengthens the city’s growing Hispanic community by encouraging involvement through charitable giving. Under the leadership of a Steering Committee, comprised of dedicated volunteers, this community outreach fund awards annual grants that address issues or concerns in the following categories: EDUCATION An educated community is a necessary prerequisite for economic and social success. The Fund is committed to programs that advance the value and primacy of education, such as combating the high school dropout problem, or fostering a college and workforce readiness mentality. HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES The general health and well-being of Hispanics must be addressed and supported. The Fund will commit itself to support programs, from mental health efforts, to chronic disease prevention and treatments for such maladies as diabetes, obesity and the AIDS epidemic. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Building communities that attain the dream of homeownership, while retaining and instilling the special values of our traditions, will create environments conducive to sustaining our overall economic and social progress. The Fund will champion programs that increase the level of tangible assets held by Latinos, thereby increasing the rate of Hispanic homeownership. It will also support community-based investment efforts designed to foster both economic opportunity and fiscal responsibility. ARTS AND CULTURE A community that remembers, celebrates and shares its uniqueness with others through song, dance, imagery and other artistic forms of expression serves as a catalyst for inspiration and dynamic change. The Fund will give consideration to programs that present the uniqueness of Hispanic arts and promote the Hispanic cultural traditions in an educational, informational, inclusive and entertaining manner.
Donations to the South Texas Hispanic FundThe Area Foundation will match the first $100,000 in community contributions to the fund with a portion of the STHF’s assets endowed for long-term sustainability. Contributions from individuals as well as local and national corporations are welcome. Donate Now
