Mentoring Matters In recognition of National Mentor Month this January, the Area Foundation is proud to highlight two agencies offering school-based mentoring opportunities with area school children and teenagers.
Webster's Dictionary defines mentor as "a trusted counselor or guide." As we discovered, a mentor is much, much more. These dedicated men and women are teachers, life coaches, confidents, and friends who nurture positive life experiences for these young people.
The Communities in Schools San Antonio and Big Brothers Big Sisters South Texas dedicate resources to match volunteer mentors with at-risk students in need of someone special to "help with the difficult things in life." By partnering with schools, corporations, and other city programs, each organization can cultivate and grow their mentor programs. Mentors spend quality time with these young San Antonians, encouraging them academically but most importantly being a much needed friend.
Rosie Hopkins, a CPS Energy volunteer mentor, understands the impact of building a lifetime relationships with at-risk students. "These children are our future. A mentor's role is to help strengthen the future for all of us."
Communities in Schools Volunteer Coordinator Ilsa Garcia says, "An hour a week is a precious gift to a child in Bexar County in need of a personal one-on-one relationship with a caring adult."
