Biomedical Research Grants

Grants are awarded on an annual basis in the areas of cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Grants are awarded on an annual basis to programs in the areas of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Those eligible to submit applications include nonprofit organizations exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, schools, churches or governmental bodies that serve Bexar and the following counties: Frio, Atascosa, Karnes, Wilson, Guadalupe, Gonzales, Comal, Blanco, Kendall, Gillespie, Kerr, Bandera and Medina.

Biomedical Research grants are awarded in the following areas:
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease

Applications are evaluated on

  • Originality and importance of the research
  • Likelihood that the project can gain competitive funding nationally
  • Project’s benefit to the San Antonio and South Texas community
  • Capability of the investigator to complete the study

Priority is given to

  • Junior investigators initiating pilot projects which, if funded, can be leveraged to gain additional national funding.
  • Senior investigators seeking "bridge" funding or defining new directions for their laboratories
  • Laboratories encompassing teaching components, inter-institutional collaborations or scientific inquiries of particular relevance to our South Texas population

The Area Foundation does not fund

  • Endowments
  • Debt reduction
  • Operating deficits
  • Salaries
  • Travel and printing costs related to publication

Additional information

  • All grant seekers must create an account to access the online application. Please click here to create your account. You will receive an email confirming you have created an account.    
  • Applications must be submitted electronically as outlined in the application. Any application sent to an individual staff member of the Area Foundation cannot be accepted. No faxes or hard copies will be accepted.
  • When you have submitted your application, you will receive an automated response stating the Area Foundation has received your application. If you do not receive a response immediately after submitting, please contact Lydia Saldaña at 210.228.3753.
  • Complete applications must be submitted by the deadline. Any application that is received after that time or is incomplete will not be eligible for consideration.
  • Any Principal Investigator who receives a Biomedical Research grant award in one year is not eligible to apply for the following three years. Therefore, any investigator who received a grant in 2014, 2015 or 2016 is not eligible to submit an application for 2017.
  • Applications are reviewed by the Biomedical Research Community Advisory Committee, a diverse group of community volunteers with expertise and knowledge of Biomedical Research. Funding will be announced early April 2017.

Biomedical Research Interim Project Report

All 2015 Biomedical Research grant recipients must submit either an interim or final report by Friday, May 27, 2016. If your project is scheduled for completion after May 27, 2016, you will submit this interim report form. If your project is complete before May 27, 2016, submit the final report one month after completion of your project. The completion date for your project can be found on page one of your 2015 award contract.
