This “Financial Oversight” session will cover six principles related to a board’s responsibilities in setting policies and procedures to ensure wise stewardship of charitable resources, as developed by The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, convened by Independent Sector and supported by BoardSource.

Description

The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, convened by Independent Sector and supported by BoardSource, developed “Principles for Good Governance and Ethical Practice” in 2007.  They identified 33 principles designed to guide board members and staff professionals of charitable organizations as they work to improve their own operations.  The San Antonio Area Foundation is presenting these 33 principles over four sessions to be held quarterly throughout the year.  The “Financial Oversight” session will cover six principles related to the board’s responsibilities in setting policies and procedures to ensure wise stewardship of charitable resources.

  • Annual Budget, Financial Performance and Investments
  • Loans to Directors, Officers or Trustees
  • Resource Allocation for Programs and Administration
  • Travel and Other Expense Policies
  • Expense Reimbursement for Nonbusiness Travel Companion

Who should take this class?

Board members, Executive Directors, professional staff and administrative staff who support Board members or meetings.

This workshop is included in our Nonprofit Management Certification series and fulfills three hours in the Financial Management competency area.

Meet the Presenter:

Jeannie Frazier has over 30 years of experience working in the healthcare and biomedical research industry, most of it in non-profit environments.  She spent 13 years at a large trauma teaching hospital where she was CFO.  She also served as CFO for a cancer center and at a basic biomedical research facility funded primarily by federal grants.  She was CFO for a for-profit start-up company that provided health screening to individuals, both as part of company wellness events and in retail environments.  She was involved in the development and management of a large private medical office building in the Houston medical center.  She currently works with a term that provides temporary CFO services to small and mid-size organizations.

Jeannie has served on a variety of non-profit boards.  These include energy and laundry co-ops that provided services to hospitals, a credit union, and a credit counseling service.  She is a board member for several organizations supporting children, including AFS Intercultural Programs, Voices for Children, and is currently the board chair for Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas.  She served as the community member on the entity that oversees all healthcare in the Texas prison system, a gubernatorial appointment.

Jeannie earned a BS in Mathematical Sciences and a MS in Engineering Economics, both from Stanford University.  She is married and has two grown children.

REFUND/CREDIT POLICY: The San Antonio Area Foundation has a strict no refund policy.

If the registrant is not able to attend the workshop and/or class, a substitute may be sent. If a workshop and/or class has been unexpectedly cancelled and/or postponed by the Area Foundation, a refund or credit towards another workshop and/or class will be issued. No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than 48 hours before a workshop.
