This course is focused on simple and clear techniques to use when working with supervisors, senior management and boards of directors to help bring clarity to the problem(s) at hand, expedite resolution and get the show back on the road.


Has your work ever ground to a halt because someone above you in the hierarchy couldn’t make a decision, didn’t give your action item the attention it deserved or otherwise misread what you needed from them? Managing UP will help you break through the logjam. Leaders who master the art of Managing UP are not only able to get what they need from their superiors, they are also highly valued as self-starters who solve problems and advance the action while others get stuck in the mud.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Assess your own comfort zone in dealing with authority figures you are relying on
  • Learn about straightforward tools like the A/B option and complete requests to help you break through the clutter surrounding busy bosses and supporters to get your needs met
  • Gain insight into the various domains of “standing” that we each have with critical colleagues in our ecosystem, why it matters to elicit their support and how to build it up when it’s lacking

Who should take this class?
This course is ideal for middle managers (directors, managers and coordinators) who frequently interact with higher levels of leadership for decision making, CEOs wanting to strengthen their skills in working with board members and critical stakeholders, and individuals who want to become more effective in working with others who have greater authority/seniority/influence than they do.

This workshop is included in our Nonprofit Management Certification series and fulfills three hours in the Managing Staff and Volunteers competency area.

Meet our Presenter:

Francisco A. Gónima is an experienced executive coach, community facilitator, and social sector strategist with a passion for supporting innovation and social enterprise. The first decade of his career was spent in leadership roles with the American Red Cross in Denver, Colorado and then at their National Headquarters in Washington, DC. In addition to his disaster management duties, he was utilized as an “Intra-preneur” for the organization. For the last eight years Francisco has grown a successful executive coaching, leadership development & strategy practice. He provides strategic counsel and expert facilitation services to entrepreneurs, non-profits, and government leaders. As a community engagement expert, he has conducted community-based research and outreach for universities, foundations and government agencies with a focus on building lasting relationships along the way.

Francisco holds a BA in Latin American Studies/Government from The University of Texas at Austin. He is a National Disaster Management & Leadership Instructor for the American Red Cross. He is a member of the International Coaching Federation and received his formation as an Ontological Coach from the Newfield Network. He is adjunct staff for the San Antonio Area Foundation where he is a member of the Leadership Development & Capacity Building Faculty and serves as Collective Impact Coach & Facilitator for the Excel Beyond the Bell San Antonio Network, a coalition of over two dozen youth serving agencies working to extend quality youth development to 100% of San Antonio youth.

REFUND/CREDIT POLICY: The San Antonio Area Foundation has a strict no refund policy.  If the registrant is not able to attend the workshop and/or class, a substitute may be sent. If a workshop and/or class has been unexpectedly cancelled and/or postponed by the Area Foundation, a refund or credit towards another workshop and/or class will be issued. No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than 48 hours before a workshop.
