Learn how to recognize and develop employee skills and how to address some common performance issues.


Supervision is not just how a manager or leader makes sure that the work is being done to specifications; it is also the way to identify gaps in employee performance that can be built into a development plan. Supervisors that build relevant development plans for the work being done today and for growth of the employee in the organization will keep the employee engaged and retain them in the organization.

Learning Objectives:

  • How to recognize development opportunities in the following areas: Technical Skills, Social/Soft Skills, Analytical Skills, Leadership/Management Skills.
  • How to address some of the common performance issues: Drug and Alcohol usage, Harassment/Bullying, Tardiness, Poor Quality Work, Customer Complaints.
  • How to structure development conversations.

Who should take this class?

Managers, Supervisors, and Leaders should take this class even if there are no current issues. This class helps build an awareness of potential issues and ways to address the items in an effective way.

This workshop is included in our Nonprofit Management Certification series and fulfills three hours in the Managing Staff and Volunteers competency area.

Meet our Presenter:

As President of VATX Consulting, Michelle Cox brings diverse skills such as organizational development, analytics, human resources, process management, and change management. She has served clients of all sizes ranging from large publicly-owned corporations to small privately-held companies. In addition, Michelle teaches for three colleges and universities in the areas of Organization Development, Human Resources, Statistics and Data Analytics, Project Management, and Leadership.
Michelle has helped clients with balanced scorecards, communication plans, compensation analysis, dashboards, data analytics, employee development plans, employee hiring interviews, Human Resource investigations, job design, job descriptions, kaizen events, organization design, process design, process improvement, strategic planning, training delivery, data analytics, and training design.

Michelle has a PhD in Organizational Leadership and an MBA with a concentration in Organizational Development. She is certified in Adult Education. Michelle has been involved with different non-profits for over 30 years.
