Below are answers to some of our frequently asked questions about the scholarship application process.

How do I learn about San Antonio Area Foundation scholarships?

Review the apply for a scholarship page and find information on eligibility, application process and application deadlines for each scholarship fund.

Is there an application fee for Area Foundation scholarships?

No, there is not a fee to apply.

Do I have to register to apply for a scholarship?

There are different types of applications available through the Area Foundation. To apply for the common or individual processes, you do have to register by creating a password and login. 

 

Can I apply for more than one scholarship at a time?

You may be eligible for more than one scholarship.  We encourage you to apply for all scholarships that fit your criteria. Please visit our application page to see the different category of applications. 

How do I know which scholarships use the common application?

Reviewing the different categories on the application page will provide details on the funds available and their criteria.

How do I apply for multiple scholarship funds?

By completing the application for the scholarships with a February deadline (common application), you will be considered for all scholarships that fit your criteria. This common application is used for 50 different scholarship funds.   

For any scholarship fund that uses a different deadline, you will need to apply for those funds separately. The link will direct you to the required application.  

What should I do if my email address needs to be changed?

Contact Brandie McHazlett, 210.228.3766 , to make sure we change your email address as notifications are sent out by email.

What is the average amount of a scholarship?

Scholarships range from $500-$8,000 with an average award of $2,000.

Is there a maximum number of scholarships that I am able to receive?

Yes, if you are selected for multiple scholarships you will receive a maximum of four awards.

May I email my application?

No. Applications must be submitted through our online scholarship process.

Which transcript do I submit?

High school seniors or students who have completed less than one full term of postsecondary education, submit your high school transcript. If applicable, provide your SAT/ACT scores if they are not included on your transcript.

Students currently or previously enrolled in college or vocational-technical school,
 submit your college or vo-tech transcripts from each school attended.

How do I submit my transcript?

Transcripts must be uploaded to the application.

What are my chances for receiving a scholarship?

Scholarships are competitive and meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee funding. Applications are reviewed by diverse groups of volunteers who serve on numerous selection committees. The committee members review all applications and select recipients based on availability of funds and the competitiveness of the applicant pool.

How and when will I be notified if I receive a scholarship?

Once you have submitted a completed scholarship application, the committee will review the application. If you are selected as a new recipient, you will be notified by email or by mail in late April or early May depending on which scholarship you applied for. The award letter will provide information on which scholarship you received along with the criteria and amount of the award.

If my application is declined, do you explain why?

Because of the number of applications we receive, it is impossible to notify applicants regarding why they were not selected.

Do I receive the scholarship award check?

All scholarship checks are made payable to the school you will be attending and mailed directly to the school's financial aid office. There are no exceptions to this rule. The check is mailed the first week of August and your school is asked to divide the payment into two equal payments–one for the fall semester and the other for the spring semester.

If I receive a scholarship one year, will I automatically receive it the following year?

Some scholarships are renewable. Your award letter will indicate whether the scholarship is renewable, a one-time award, if you are required to re-apply and the requirements for maintaining your eligibility. 

If I receive a scholarship, what do I need to do?

  • Reply promptly to requests for information.
  • If you receive your award notification by email follow the directions in the email and respond promptly. 
  • Make note of all deadlines. They are firm.
  • Notify the Area Foundation immediately if you stop attending school, change schools or change your major.
  • Notify the Area Foundation within two weeks if there is a change in your permanent address, email address or phone number.

I am not sure which school I am attending. Do I still complete the acceptance forms?

How do I thank the donors who provided the funds for my scholarship?

You may address all correspondence to the donors c/o the San Antonio Area Foundation, 303 Pearl Parkway, Suite 114, San Antonio, TX 78215.  We are happy to forward your correspondence to the donors.  If they are no longer living, we will forward your letter to a family member or our Board of Directors.
